Getting started with Self Defense? Don’t make these 3 Mistakes
Yesss! I’m so excited that you are thinking about or recently signed up to take self-defense classes. As women we definitely have to be proactive in protecting ourselves. You obviously understand that being a curvy and/or plus size woman does not make you exempt. We are all at risk. Curvy Fit Chicks of course do the most in their workouts and this will be no different. To ensure your success, I want you to avoid 3 common mistakes I see most often with newbies to self-defense training.
#1 Take one class
First and foremost is women thinking that taking one class is enough. One class will never be enough to cover the span of your lifetime. What if nothing happens for 10 years? Are you really confident that you will be prepared? You cannot feel secure that you will be able to recall what to do in a situation that is highly intense and frightening when you have only done this one time. You are acquiring new skills and techniques that will be useful in defending yourself from harm or even potentially death. You will need to consistently keep these skills perfected and polished so you will not forget them in the crucial time that you will need them.
#2 Not train consistently
Curvy Fit Sis…you knew this was coming right?!!! This is a biggie for sure. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that learning self-defense is enough. You have to stay disciplined in your curvy fitness always. It is essential to your success in learning and practicing self-defense. Why you ask? It’s because you have to be fit in order to actually have the stamina and strength to defend yourself well. You do not know how strong your opponent will be and let’s be honest, men are physically stronger. It may not be the popular opinion but it is facts. We deal with facts over here. You must never underestimate your opponent. This point feeds into the previous one, because self-defense techniques need skill, strength and stamina to execute well. A curvy fit woman is better equipped to protect and defend herself against a male aggressor/attacker than one that is not. A curvy fit woman is prepared because she is FIT and can endure the time it may take to free herself from the situation. When you are fighting for your life, one minute can feel like a lifetime. This is why Curvy Fit Chicks collaborated with Brutal Fitness Challenge to offering fitness/self-defense classes for women. This allows women to have the best of both worlds. You will improve your fitness with full body training and learn how to protect yourself with self-defense skills.
#3 Depend on self-defense tools
Your confidence is your ability to defend yourself cannot be left solely on the tools you own. Tools are only as good as the abilities of the person who owns them. In the case of women and self-defense, you have to be able to get to them and actually put them to use in order for them to be effective. What if there is a scenario in your home with a male “friend” where he is trying to sexually assault you, how will you access your tools to defend yourself if they are not near you or if you become over powered? Tools are great to have and there are a variety of different ones to use, but you must be both physically fit and know what self-defense skills to free yourself from a compromising situation.
Now that we have discussed some of the mistakes women make when deciding to take women’s self-defense training, you are on your way to being a force to be reckoned with. One thing to remember as you proceed in your mission to learn and master protecting yourself is that you are a powerful curvy woman. Your belief in yourself, your knowledge and skills will be your greatest weapon.
